However, Naomi Grossman was able to do so and brilliantly accomplished her task.
Pepper is a complex character. Naomi Grossman had to play a woman with psychological disorders who had previously been treated at Briarcliff Clinic. She looks sweet and innocent, but in reality, she is completely different. Pepper killed her sister’s child. First, she drowned it, and then she cut off its ears. The character’s appearance is also unusual — she has a small head. This is a symptom of a genetic disorder.
At the clinic, the patient behaves quietly and politely, creating a favourable impression. But when Pepper appears in the fourth season, all viewers are simply shocked. They can learn how she lived before her mental illness and how her fate unfolded.
Incidentally, this is not a fictional character. The director based Pepper’s character on a man named Schlitz, who died at the end of the 20th century. He travelled around cities with travelling artists and performed at various fairs.
It is understandable that it was not easy for Natalie to get into such a role. She completely shaved her hair and was also forced to sit in the make-up chair for three hours before filming. And so it was, day after day.
